After Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz’s report into suspected FBI abuses of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) court dropped last week, fired director James Comey was almost the first one to claim vindication.
“Well, the wait is over and those who smeared the FBI are due for an accounting,” Comey wrote in an editorial for the Washington Post (of course), as reported by the Washington Times.
He then attacked our current Justice Department chief.
“In particularly, Attorney General William P. Barr owes the institution he leads, and the American people, an acknowledgment of the truth,” Comey continued, claiming that Barr — who is serving his second stint as attorney general — “slimed” the FBI and the DoJ by supporting President Trump’s correct claim that his 2016 campaign was ‘spied on’ by the bureau Comey led.
“Unfortunately, it appears that Barr will continue his practice of deriding the Justice Department when the facts don’t agree with Trump’s fiction,” he wrote.
“Pointing to his personally commissioned ‘review’ of the FBI’s case-opening, Barr has declared it is too soon to conclude the FBI was right to start an investigation. If his goal is simply to support the president’s conspiracy theories, it will always be too soon to acknowledge the facts,” he added.
Boy, what hubris. What unbridled arrogance.
Remember, this is the same James Comey who let the most criminally investigated presidential nominee ever — Hillary Clinton — walk scot-free after her serial abuses and mishandling of classified information via her unsecured private email server, any one instance of which should have landed her in jail for a minimum of five years. (Related: The FIX was in: Comey decided MONTHS before FBI finished Clinton probe he would clear her.)
And recall, this is the same Comey who worked for Attorney General Loretta Lynch, who met with Hillary’s hubby, Bill Clinton, on an airport tarmac in Phoenix just days before Comey’s highly unorthodox and unprecedented press conference where he claimed “no reasonable prosecutor” would bring an espionage case against Clinton (though scores of regular men and women have been charged and jailed for far less mishandling of classified information).
Fortunately, Barr — himself an old Washington hand who’s been there, done that, wouldn’t let Comey off the hook.
On Sunday, Comey lied to … er, told … Fox News’ Chris Wallace that he was “seven layers above” the phony “Russian collusion” investigation into the 2016 Trump campaign — a.k.a. Spygate, Zero Hedge reported. That investigation involved securing four warrants from the secretive FISA Court to spy on very temporary Trump campaign figure Carter Page, even after the FBI knew he wasn’t a Russian spy or plant.
But as Barr noted in an interview with Fox News’ Martha McCallum this week, that’s BS.
“The idea that this was seven layers below him is simply not true,” Barr said Wednesday.
“I think that one of the problems with what happened was precisely that they pulled the investigation up to the executive floors, and it was run and birddogged by a very small group of very high level officials,” he continued, meaning that it was a manufactured scheme known only to a small group of ranking officials — like when a coup attempt is being hatched.

The IG’s report, it should be noted, found exculpatory evidence that cleared Page but the FBI withheld it from the FISA Court so the bureau under Comey could continue spying on any interactions that Page continued to have with the Trump campaign and, perhaps later, the Trump administration.
James Comey is the worst of all public officials: At some point he decided, like other members of the deep state, that he was beyond reproach, beyond accountable to a president he does not like or ‘deserves’ to be in office, and, hence, beyond accountable to the American people.
